Thales has signed a £36 million contract with the UK Ministry of Defence to supply hundreds more Lightweight Multirole Missiles to the British Armed Forces, strengthening the United Kingdom’s missile stockpile and short-range precision strike capabilities.
The latest agreement builds on existing contracts between the UK Ministry of Defence and Thales, supporting continued investment in advanced missile systems for land, sea, and air operations. Deliveries of the newly ordered missiles are expected to begin over the coming months.
Thales Expands Lightweight Multirole Missile Supply to UK Armed Forces
The Lightweight Multirole Missile, also known as LMM, is a laser-guided missile designed to deliver precision effects against a wide range of threats. The system is already in service with the UK and allied nations and has been used across multiple operational domains.
According to Thales, the missile is particularly effective in the counter-uncrewed aerial systems, or C-UAS, role. As drone threats continue to evolve, demand for flexible and accurate short-range missile systems has increased across modern armed forces.
LMM Strengthens UK Counter-Drone and Precision Strike Capability
The new contract will enhance the British Armed Forces’ ability to respond to aerial, surface, and land-based threats using a lightweight and highly versatile missile system. LMM’s laser guidance system enables precision targeting, making it suitable for missions where accuracy and reduced collateral impact are important.
Its adaptability across land, sea, and air platforms gives the UK Armed Forces a flexible capability for modern operational environments. The missile’s role in counter-drone operations is especially significant as uncrewed aerial systems have become a growing challenge in both conventional and asymmetric warfare.
Missile Production Boosted in Northern Ireland
Thales has significantly increased missile production capacity at its facilities in Northern Ireland. Since 2022, the company has quadrupled its production capability, allowing it to support growing UK and allied demand for advanced missile systems.
The latest contract will also support around 700 highly skilled jobs in Belfast, where the Lightweight Multirole Missile is designed and manufactured. This reinforces Northern Ireland’s role in the UK’s defense industrial base and contributes to the country’s sovereign missile production capability.
UK MoD Continues Investment in Missile Stockpiles
The £36 million agreement comes as the UK Ministry of Defence continues to strengthen its missile inventories and improve readiness across the armed forces. Increased stockpiles are seen as a key part of maintaining operational resilience and supporting future military requirements.
For Thales, the contract further confirms the importance of the Lightweight Multirole Missile as a proven and adaptable weapon system.
