Schiebel CAMCOPTER S-300 Selected for European Defence Fund SWORD Project

Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER® S-300 unmanned air system has been selected as the airborne platform for SWORD, a European Defence Fund project designed to advance Europe’s future anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

The SWORD project, formally known as Stand-off anti-submarine Warfare Operations by Remote Deployment, is led by TKMS ATLAS ELEKTRONIK. The 36-month program brings together leading European defense and technology partners to develop a System-of-Systems solution for stand-off Anti-Submarine Warfare, also known as ASW.

CAMCOPTER S-300 to Support Stand-Off Anti-Submarine Warfare

Under the SWORD project, Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER S-300 will serve as the airborne platform supporting remote deployment operations. The project aims to create an integrated sensor-to-shooter functional chain that enables naval platforms to detect, track, classify, and neutralize submerged threats.

This approach is intended to extend the operational reach of naval forces by allowing anti-submarine warfare missions to be conducted from greater distances. By using unmanned systems, advanced sensors, and networked command-and-control capabilities, SWORD seeks to improve how European navies respond to modern underwater threats.

European Defence Fund Project Focuses on Future Naval Capabilities

The European Defence Fund-backed SWORD project reflects Europe’s increasing focus on maritime security, underwater surveillance, and next-generation naval defense technologies. Submarine threats remain a major concern for modern navies, particularly as contested maritime environments become more complex.

By developing a mature concept design for stand-off ASW, the project aims to strengthen Europe’s ability to protect naval assets, sea lines of communication, and critical maritime infrastructure. The use of unmanned aerial systems such as the CAMCOPTER S-300 could provide greater flexibility, persistence, and operational safety during anti-submarine warfare missions.

Schiebel Strengthens Role in Unmanned Maritime Systems

The selection of the CAMCOPTER S-300 highlights Schiebel’s growing role in the unmanned maritime systems market. The company’s CAMCOPTER family has been used for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and naval mission support, making it well suited for future maritime security applications.

As the SWORD project progresses, the CAMCOPTER S-300 is expected to contribute to the development of advanced stand-off ASW concepts that combine unmanned platforms, sensor networks, and integrated naval weapons systems.

Why the SWORD Project Matters

The SWORD project comes at a time when European navies are investing in more autonomous, networked, and long-range capabilities. Stand-off anti-submarine warfare offers a way to reduce risk to crewed platforms while improving detection and response against submerged threats.

For Schiebel, the selection of the CAMCOPTER S-300 marks another important step in positioning its unmanned air systems for complex naval operations. For Europe, the project supports broader efforts to enhance defense cooperation and develop advanced technologies under the European Defence Fund.
